The economic growth experienced by Russia over the last decade has been remarkable not only from the oil exportation perspective but also thanks to Russia’s foreign investment programme and their participation in the foreign markets. With all these outside interactions there has been a dramatic rise in the use and need for teaching English jobs within Russia.

Thanks to the economic boost that Russia is enjoying teaching English jobs can become a really good source of income. Contracts in both schools and companies can be acquired for durations ranging from six months, a year or even longer in some cases.

Despite the high availability of jobs competition in this field is high. There are a few companies that receive countless amounts of resumes on even the lowest paying positions. So if you really want to grab a job then resumes with the CELTA or TEFL certificate are much better received.

It is important that you study your agencies carefully as they all have different minimum requirements you need to be aware of. A simple example of this is the English language team, or Mr. English. This club has branches located throughout Russia. They have been partners with many international agencies for several years and have begun to only allow the best of the best to get through the application stage.

For people that are already in Russia, there are other possibilities. The services of an English Native speaker are valued, more times than not, their services are more valued than certified English lecturers from Russia. A variety of institutions and companies hire native speakers to educate English classes. The average wage is fairly reasonable as well, being anywhere between $10 and $17 an hour you can live comfortably in Russia providing you can find the work because although these jobs are often easy to find, the hours can be irregular and minimal, which makes it financially difficult at times.

There are a few more things to consider when teaching in Russia. Certain schools in the country are well known for their unprincipled business practices: non-payments or late payments for staff teachers. A few acquaintances and past students that have been employed by these companies advise those who are interested not to work for American Language Centre, Harvard English, ELC Time and NY Language Centre. In 2006, the majority of these have lost their business simply down to mistreatment of their teachers. With this in mind you should always perform sufficient research in order to avoid any problems later on.

If you are looking for a ‘safe’ company, you should consider those that have an international reach, these are companies that are located around the globe and not only in Russia. English First and the BKC International are the two recommended companies that offer the applicant contracted work, a salary that is middle class and perks such as travel reimbursement and visa support. Before you make any decisions you should revise them all otherwise your teaching time in Russia could turn into hell.

In general most of the teachers in Saudi Arabia come from the surrounding arab countries such as Jordan, Syria and Egypt, this is ok but Saudi Arabia’s national curriculum states that English is to be taught to the students as a second language and despite this there are very few native English speakers found within the education system.

This makes it a great place to be if you’re from the UK or the USA as there is a great demand for native English speakers within the educational system. Saudi Arabia is also an oil rich nation and its links and ties with the world on a business level are vast. For this simple reason the English language is extremely important as it caters for a large expatriate population who are their on business and representing the various internationally based oil and investment companies. The staff at airports, hospitals, hotels and other businesses that offer services to these foreigners all need english language training thus making it a great place for English teachers in general.

There are many private schools within Saudi Arabia that mainly cater for the above mentioned expatriate population. For most, if not all of the lessons, English is the language that is used, however, there are also some French schools that have lessons taught in French. For more English teachers private schools should be your main target as the pay is much better and you will probably be teaching in much smaller classes making the whole experience much more enjoyable.

Another target market are the expatriate workers from non English speaking countries within Europe. They often language schools whilst they’re in Saudi Arabia to brush up and improve their English. Teaching at a language school may not always be fun; the hours are usually longer, and many classes may need to be taught at night. There are also foreign international language schools that are located in Saudi Arabia, but with some of these schools it is often required that the teacher attends a training course before starting so that they can become familiar with the way that specific schools would like their students to be taught.

When you are teaching English in Saudi Arabia and you feel that you are not making enough money, or you simply need to that little bit extra don’t worry as the need for private tuition is always high. Much of the native population of Saudi Arabia prefer to lean by private tuition as it means they can really spend some quality time with the teacher and learn much quicker. Common clients are wealthy businessmen, princes and other well off residents who simply want the best for their children, partners and family.

If you stick around until exam time then you can expect demand for private tuition to grow even higher as the students that have failed English will then most likely want to be taught privately to ensure they pass their next English exam. The average salary for an English teacher in Saudi Arabia would be anything starting from £1,500 upwards depending on the type of school and city you are working in.

Teaching English in Japan may sound like a fun and exciting thing to do, but if you are considering it, you’re advised to do your research before making your final decision. It’s important that you can be confident about the salary and job prospects you will gain whilst you are out there and most importantly whether you will fit in or not.

Depending on the age group, teaching in Japan can often be very difficult so you have to certify that you have the patience, and variety of techniques available in order to teach and successfully transfer English language skills to your Japanese students. The Japanese unlike other cultures value their language and culture very highly so teaching English there isn’t as easy as you might think.

When you’re looking into something like this, all of the schools and companies with available teaching positions may not require the same experience. Certain schools will accept applicants with just one to two years teaching experience, whilst others will only take you if you have three to four years experience and a valid Masters Degree in ESL/EFL. So before replying save yourself the rejections by doing some thorough research, it will save you time and effort.

In saying the above don’t get totally discouraged because if you think you can do well in Japan then there are many schools that will consider taking you on under a trial contract. This can be a great way of getting your foot in the door and many TEFL teachers have used this method to their advantage. Simply find out which schools are in need of English teachers and do your best to show them your enthusiasm about teaching English in Japan, it’s worked for others and could well work for you.

The average English teacher in Japan can earn anything around 250,000 yen (£1200) each month. So depending on your financial situation and your outgoings each month, it could be the deciding factor when deciding to pursue or not. The salary will vary depending where in Japan you apply, the bigger cities will have a bigger budget for English teachers so will be able to provide more whereas the smaller parts won’t be able to match. Being paid less in the smaller cities is no big deal because you will still be able to live comfortably as the cost of living will also be less.

Where you teach in Japan sometimes also has to do with the amount of experience you have in the field. The big city schools and companies may only take on the teachers with several years of experience and that masters degree, whilst the smaller city’s will be more receptive to low experience applicants. Again everyone has to start somewhere so do your research and apply appropriately.

When considering teaching English in Japan, there are a few personal traits which will make you stand out, some of these include a positive attitude, a will to succeed, a bubbly, outgoing personality and most importantly a good understanding of their culture and its history. The trick to keeping your class interested is to keep them entertained, but teach them while you do so. You can do this via a number of practical teaching methods and this can really help them gain confidence and a level of trust in your English teaching skills. It’s a difficult part of the world to teach English but never the less if you succeed it can be highly rewarding.

Many teachers have enjoyed their teaching experiences in Korea, but there are others that encountered endless problems. The biggest mistake that foreign teachers in Korea make is not reading their contract carefully. By the time they discover any issues it’s too late and before they know it they don’t have enough funds or the authority to return to their own country.

In America, when teachers discover any problems, they expect the embassy to investigate or act as lawyers to aid them. This cannot be done in Korea which is why it is important for the individual to read and understand the contract carefully before signing it.

In order to be happy and enjoy employment as an English teacher in Korea you must find a respectable school and discuss a good contract before leaving for the country, this will eliminate any unexpected issues when you finally arrive in Korea. It is very important that anyone who is considering a job in Korea to pay attention to the living and working conditions stated on the contract. It may help if you can find former employees or those that are familiar with the specific institution and ask them for guidance.

If you are serious about pursuing this in the future, the average wage for someone teaching English in Korea would be anything starting from 1.5 million won ($1,850) a month so be sure you can survive on this amount before signing anything.

If you are looking for information on Korea and teaching in the country, the KOTESOL is a great source. Although many of the English teachers end up working in the many institutes, there are other positions available so check them out as well, some examples are below:

- private informal/teaching classes
- private/government research centres
- corporate language programs
- public/editing relations

Hakwons are known as private institutes and can be found throughout Korea. Some of the institutes have many branches and are well known whilst others are much smaller and often short lived. Many of the Hakwons take on instructors for writing and conversational classes. At Hakwons the typical employee will expect to work a maximum of 30 hours a week. Many of the classes take place in the evening and early morning which gives the instructors afternoons off as free time. By doing the relevant research, instructors will find institutes that provide them accommodation as well as employment so if you play your cards right you could save quite a lot of money.

If you feel you need extra work it’s sometimes possible for full time teachers to have a part time position at other institutes or with classes that are privately arranged. However you must be certain that you get permission from your institute because part time teaching on top of your primary contract is only legal if you have that permission from the immigration authorities and of course your primary institute.

Lastly if you’re considering private lessons, consider having the fees paid prior to the lesson to provide a safe guard. Instructors teaching in Korea are reminded that they are responsible for any violations they commit so make sure that you are 100% aware of what is needed.
